It has been said that too frequent bathing strips the oils from the dogs coat, resulting in skin problems. If a dog is bathed with a good quality mild shampoo or pure soap, this should not be a problem.
If your pet's skin seems dry, longer soaking and the use of a soap free shampoo and a conditioner may help. In fact, a wide variety of shampoos are used to treat a wide variety of skin diseases.
