| Allamanda Chihuahua Kennels Article Reprinted from the "Australian Womens Weekly" Some years ago, you wrote about the help a Chihuahua gave for asthma. Thank you sincerely. I had two types of asthma and practically lived in hospitals, just to be kept alive. I had been to the best doctor's from Mayo Clinic in Minnesota to Wichita to the Gulf of Mexico. All helped for a while and then failed. One day my husband read your article and insisted I try a Chihuahua. Well, I just knew it wouldn't help, but to keep peace, I agreed to try one. My husband heard of some for sale, we went to see them, one little girl won my heart and came home with us. She soon was my companion day and night, even though I simply knew she could not help my hayfever or asthma. Oh No! How ridiculous can one be? In only three or four days my hayfever began to dry. By the time a week had passed my asthma began to fade away. By two weeks I was free of it all. Now twelve years and four Chihuahuas later I am still free. Note I do not say cured because when I am parted from my Chihuahua, asthma comes back with a bang. I thought you might like to know your article was helpful." Anne R. Hensely, Yakima, Washington. (Date unknown) In September 1961 - quite a few years ago we ran an item in this column about asthma and Chihuahuas. This possibly started the biggest stir this column ever created and was quoted not only from newspapers, but also on radio and television. I remember Arthur Godfrey made quite a thing about it, and so did some other prominent people. In a nut shell here's what it was all about. Anyone with asthma, according to this, who obtains a Chihuahua, and keeps it close at times, especially at night, is soon practically cured. The reason? well there wasn't any good scientific reason, aside from the fact that most Chihuahuas have asthma themselves, which isn't too scientific a reason, but the only one we have. It seems to work.
The biggest folder I have in my filing cabinet is packed with letters from people who have successfully combated asthma via the Chihuahua route. The mail on this subject, on which, believe me I am no expert, has divided as the years went by to maybe two or three letters a month from people like Mrs. Hensely. I know when this is published there will be another rush of mail, so let me say at the offset I don't know a damn thing about it and not much more about Chihuahuas aside from the fact that when they are in good shape, they have four legs. Most doctors (but not all) will tell you that they have heard about it and discussed the subject as being pretty corny. There have been other doctors who have written to me saying they told their patients they had nothing to loose. They recommended the Chihuahua cure as an outside possibility. Some have said they were amazed at the results.
